Australian Coffee Culture
Over 140 cafes. Five major Australian hubs—Melbourne, Sydney, the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. One highly caffeinated mission. I set out to map the absolute best of what I consider the greatest coffee culture in the world, armed with my coffee review journal and a very specific standard order: a small flat white on "skinny" milk, always with an extra shot.
This order is not just about getting that zingy morning boost; it is a calculated stress test for every barista I meet. An extra shot of espresso leaves zero room to hide a poorly pulled, bitter shot, and the milk texture instantly reveals whether the barista has the technical chops to steam the perfect microfoam and pour a flawless piece of latte art. From bustling laneways in Melbourne to sun-drenched roasteries on the coast, I have tasted my way through incredibly unique blends. I have found absolute masterpieces from standout roasters like Tim Adams, VIVO, Veneziano, Bare Bones, and St. Ali, alongside a few cups that definitely missed the mark.
My extensive coastal cafe trek does not end at the bottom of the cup. I actively document my findings through detailed Google reviews and reach out directly to the companies behind the beans. It is all about staying deeply connected to the roasters and baristas who are pushing the boundaries of flavor, building community, and keeping the vibrant, high-energy spirit of Australian coffee culture alive.
